2009 Walk Recap

The Walk to Cure Diabetes
is the fastest growing fund raising event in the history of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Last year, over $85 million was raised through the Walk to Cure Diabetes at over 200 walk sitesnationally. The goal for the 2009 Walk to Cure Diabetes is to raise $90 million. While that sounds like generous funding, it is important to keep in mind that diabetes costs our nation more than $174 million each year in direct and indirect health care costs. More than five hundred thousand men, women, and children from 5,000 large corporations and local companies along with 3,500 family teams will participate in the Walk to Cure Diabetes this year. Funds are raised as walkers ask friends, relatives and co-workers to support them in their fundraising efforts.
The Albuquerque Walk to Cure Diabetes
is one of the largest family-friendly walks in New Mexico. In 2008, the Albuquerque Walk attracted nearly 5,000 people and raised over $500,000 for diabetes research. The Albuquerque Walk to Cure Diabetes appeals to families and corporations with live entertainment, a kid’s area with face painting and games, and a free picnic style lunch. In 2009, we aim to recruit over 5,000 walkers thanks to the support of the families of JDRF and corporate partners like B&D Industries, Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico, UNM Hospital, Coca-Cola, Albertsons, New Mexico Mutual and Walgreen’s, just to name a few. The Walk event is one of two annual fundraising vehicles (we also host a Golf Tournament) organized by the New Mexico Branch of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation designed specifically to raise significant dollars from the corporate and lay community for researching a cure for type 1 diabetes.
The New Mexico Branch is part of the Desert Southwest Chapter of JDRF, based in Phoenix, AZ. Our chapter, comprised of the Phoenix, Tucson, and Albuquerque offices has experienced phenomenal growth the last few years and was recognized as the JDRF International Chapter of the Year in 2004. In 2008, the Desert Southwest Chapter raised over $8 million for diabetes research.
WHO HAS DIABETES?
Diabetes kills one American every three minutes. As many as 21 million Americans have the disease; of these 5.9 million remain undiagnosed. More than 153,000 New Mexicans live with diabetes. Diabetes afflicts more than 190 million people worldwide, and the World Health Organization estimates that the number will more than double by 2025. A new case of diabetes is diagnosed every 40 seconds.
JUVENILE DIABETES RESERCH FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) is a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to find a cure for Diabetes and its complications through the support of research. JDRF is proud to say that in a typical year, more than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and education about research.
